Projects Ahoy! by colonel-strawberry Projects Ahoy! by colonel-strawberry
A couple days ago I farted around doing this in between commissions, thought it was kind of a fun way to showcase some of the ongoing projects, new and old, that I've had floating around.

These are just the ones that are aimed at some sort of animated finished product though!

They're just sort of those ideas you have laying around and think about until time comes that you need a fresh idea to work with but don't want to start from complete scratch XD

Like like love and Old potato, Rotten tomato are relatively new and not as developed as the rest though, the two old guy characters haven't really been designed even, and that's the part I like!.
And wow, right, they're not all about dogs C:

Maybe I'll color these one day! Maybe not. But I DID think up a really cute Subcat teaser the other night that might be a fun side project for now.

Where can I find out more about Anchor? *u*
Looks neeeaattt. Reminds me vaguely of
an age-old project of mine that never made it
much farther than a notepad of story prompts.
All those characters are cuties. <3

Baahhh, I love all of these. I think GatorDog will always be my favorite, but the rest of 'em are still brilliant and quite interesting. Very intrigued by this showcase, for sure.

These all look excellent! Can't wait to see the results.

Just warning you, with Scarfy...the student audiences I'm showing things to seem terrifyingly enamored with the character's eyes. It'll have to be pretty good animation to preserve the lack of pupils (I'm having problems, myself, with a German Shepherd I'm animating...her pupils are so large it's hard to get the eye in motion).

The whole 'rotten tomato' thing looks well designed...there a story behind that one? ^^ We're all ears.

I do like how free your anchor designs are getting... Pegleg in particular seems much more animatable. A bit more character to them, but it looks scarily like you're compromising some of the style for the sake of rapid production. Anchor's scars , Vince's perkiness and [Irving]'s crooked muzzle gave them so much life in the first few sketches, and I'd hate to see them go with a new style... Briggs looks amazing in this iteration, though, as does Irving's anatomy.
Vince in particular looked pretty good in tour earlier designs, this sketch makes him look hilariously like a basset hound. I kinda like the effect, but thin legs and long legs aren't the same thing. The personality you're giving him feels like he needs to be shorter to the ground, but really, thick legs would simply clog up the silhouette. (mock french teacher voice) Com-po-SIshion, dear, CompoSITion iz evaerysing!

Oh i know! It'll be rough. I've debated putting really light pupils or something but ehh.. It'd have to be really exaggerated to get the point across. As far as the storyline goes, I think it might be pretty doable.

Yes! Just a tiny foundation idea of a story. Definitely want to run it by you eventually!

Your ears comment made me rethink how he might wear the bandana XD With the ears flopping down like that. Just a test run! Haha, we'll have to work on him though. AND, totally didn't realize how funny it might be if Irving tried walking upright like a person even after his curse took effect. Some good hobbling and crashing around would be fun to animate at least!

Oh, you laugh, but your projects are for the most part fucking awesome. I'm not even going to sully them with an attempt at description.

Scarfe's a challenge, but it's not worth putting in pupils. The character's better without them, so complain to him when your wrist hurts from retakes. XD He would be fun to animate, though, just for the four arms. (Although you have my preemptory blessing to not make the character looks like Rob Liefeld's Forearm. [link] Look at where that arm is coming from. LOOK AT IT.)

Does it sound any less stupid than some of my stories? The life of Hitler's dog; a rabbit abstract expressionist fights a weasel with six tentacles and three eyes; a chicken learns to see the future and gets bid upon by the predators of the forest to help them defeat the others; a squirrel uses dancing emeralds as slaves until they try to turn her into one of them; a girl born a snake argues with her mother... take your pick, they're much dumber than old man argument.

Ah, it does make sense! What a challenge his ears are becoming... In my sketchings, I've found that his ears look fine as long as they don't start more than halfway down his head. If we disguise the ratio by extending Vince's cheeks, we can get an okay result.
He tries to walk, crashes, perks and tries to sniff something doggystyle, at which point he abruptly pauses and looks into the camera la "Cheese Chasers" ("What the fuck am I doing!?") - whatever he sniffs makes him cough, and the coughs start to come as barks halfway, making him abruptly and horrifiedily seize his maw with his paws, only to realize that his fingers don't bend... little bits of business, for him to slowly and terrifyingly realize just what his situation is.
I've drawn a few examples of development sketches, and am scanning them as we speak. [link]

HAH, I dunno man, all those projects sound preeeetty awesome. Haha.

And ohmygosh that ARM. It makes NO SENSEEEE! I was super nervous about animating scarfys arms, and then while watching uhh.. dang what was it. John carter or something, of all things, I was like oh, I guess it's doable. Its not like they all need to be flailing around at any given time.

Life of hitlers dog needs to be made, it'd make a sweet webcomic at least. Seriously!

Ahhh, we need to move these comments to notes, I feel like I keep accidentally deleting them and not being able to find the original post xD

[link] They sound awesome until the day you have to draw Hitler's dog. XD
(And, to top it off, the villain of the piece that I intend to follow this up with had mildly Semitic facial features...I had to redesign the whole cast in light of "You simply don't cast a Semitic villain after a film about Hitler's dog.")

Don't worry about Scarfy's arms, as long as you keep it believable that the lower arms have weight and muscle, that it takes effort to move them, and that there's a part of the anatomy that the arm attaches to (say, midaxillarily at the bottom of the curve of the ribcage, with mobile scapulae attached like tendons). And they certainly don't need to all be moving, you're right there! ^^

It's being made right now, to the (gender-transposed) text of [link] George Graham Vest's palmarius purpurae prosae, "Eulogy on Old Drum." Every cliche about the loyal and noble dog, in three paragraphs. XD
And I like the idea of a webcomic. Showing her fighting with Eva's dogs, being posed for official photographs... but frankly, the most dramatic part is her death, and a webcomic would keep putting that off into the future.

Oh, relax. They'll be fine, not like they're clogging them up or anything.

Haha, yeeahh, true that. But man, would be pretty entertaining!

It's actually awesome practice for posing, since you have to be really careful about not making his arms a big jumbled mess. Sounds like a cool anatomical drawing of his skeletal and muscle structure might be fun/helpful too!

HAH, nice! It could be a.. short webcomic? I love when main characters die, sighh.

Yeah...Anti-Semitism isn't something you can half-ass. I have to figure out how to make it look good.
I mean, the film itself has both a giant dimension of clouds and stained glass, a rabbit's fall-leaves-and-twigs reproduction of "Vir Heroicus Sublimus," and a hellweasel with six legs, two eyes, mandibles, and a body made of a black tentacle. If that's not entertaining, I don't know what is.

It's like he has another scarf around his midsection made up of arms! I find that when you have more limbs than you know what to do with (I've done six-armed characters at one point or another), you have to find ways of keeping them varied in the functions they do with the limbs, and use them to reflect and counterpoint the lines of action. Helps immensely.

It could certainly be a minicomic...made on library copy machines and folded and distributed at local zine shops.
Thanks to my opera background, I feel I'm being gypped if no one dies for my dime. [link] [link] [link] [link] You always do your best singing right before your mad suicide, wuzzup withat?

I rather like how you compare the production of your art to flatulence. I guess thats what happens when you put the 'f' for fun, back into 'art'... All your characters are really rather nice; they'd make great childrens story books...
